Graduations
Solemn is not usually a word people associate with in jovial times, but at graduations, it is an indispensable characteristic that maintains the dignity of the event. Last summer, I experienced my first graduation. It was a joyous time, but the honking of horns and excessive clapping tainted the happiness of the moment. If anything, obstreperous behaviors at formal events are distracting and take away from the meaning of the occasion. However, it is not the horn honking, or even the screams that produce the bitterest taste. Excessive clapping and sheering from the crowd is the largest problem at graduations across the nation. Unfortunately, parents are not the only unruly ones at these events. Young adults and teenagers compose the majority of rowdy behaviors that pose as a disturbance to those trying to listen or even the students involved in the actual ceremony. Almost everyone has experienced the embarrassment and self consciousness that comes after the person in front of you receives gratuitous applause and then when your turn finally arrives, utter silence is the only thing that greets you. Not only does this take away from the self satisfaction a student feels, but it also reduces the graduation to a popularity contest. The most popular individuals receive thunderous shouts while the rest must accept their woeful fate. Though some schools are trying to limit this from occurring by asking audiences to be silent until the end, it still lies on the shoulders of those in attendance. Of course, most of the time these individuals have no idea what they are putting the other students through, but it will not be until people realize the effect such actions have on others that this pattern will change. |
